Your First Wash Day at Unity Salon: What to Expect
If you’ve never been to a curly hair specialist before, the first visit can feel like a big step. Maybe you’ve been doing your own wash day at home for years. Maybe you’ve been to salons that didn’t know what to do with your texture. This post walks you through exactly what happens at your first appointment at Unity Salon & Spa Center — no surprises.
It Starts With a Real Conversation
Every first visit begins with a consultation. Not a quick “what are we doing today?” — a real conversation about your hair history, your current routine, and what you want your curls to look like. We talk about what products you’re using, what’s worked, what hasn’t, and what your goals are.
This matters because curly hair isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your curl pattern, density, porosity, and damage history all affect what your hair needs. The consultation is where we figure that out together.
The “Works” Experience
Your first visit is always one of our Works services. Think of it as a reset for your hair and an education session for you. Here’s what happens:
- Detox and clarify: We remove product buildup so we can see your hair’s true condition.
- Cleanse and hydrate: A deep conditioning treatment tailored to your hair’s needs.
- Curl-by-curl cut: Each curl is shaped individually so your hair falls naturally when you style it at home.
- Styling lesson: Depending on which Works service you choose, you’ll either watch and learn the technique (Look & Learn) or get hands-on practice defining your curls with us (Works for Curls Experience).
How Long Does It Take?
Plan for 2 to 4 hours depending on which Works service you book. The Works for Curls Experience ($540) is our longest (4 hours) because it includes the most hands-on training. Cuts and Curls ($300) is our shortest first-visit service. Works for Curls with Look & Learn ($405) falls in between.
Yes, that’s longer than a typical salon visit. But this is your foundation visit — everything after this is shorter maintenance.
What to Bring
Bring photos of the products you’re currently using. If you have a wash day routine, tell us about it — how often you wash, what steps you follow, what results you’re getting. The more we know about what you’re doing now, the better we can help you adjust.
After Your First Visit: Come Back Sooner, Not Later
Most clients do return every 3 to 4 months for maintenance — but we actually recommend coming back within the first month.
Here’s why: the sooner you come in after your first visit, the better your results will be. When you’re learning a new routine at home, things don’t always go perfectly on the first try. Coming back within a month lets us troubleshoot whatever came up — maybe your curls didn’t hold the way you expected, maybe a product isn’t working with your water, maybe your technique needs a small adjustment.
Think of it like this: your first visit teaches you the system. Your second visit is where we troubleshoot and fine-tune it for your real life. Clients who come back within that first month have a much higher success rate because we catch the small issues before they become big frustrations.
After that, you can settle into a every 3 to 4 month maintenance schedule.
