At Unity Salon & Spa Center, we teach a method we call the 7-Day Wash & Go — a system designed to help your curls last all week without re-washing. Here’s how it works.

It Starts With Hydration

Curls that don’t last past Day 2 are usually curls that weren’t hydrated enough from the start. Curly hair is naturally dry — the oils from your scalp have to travel down a spiral path to reach your ends, and that journey takes longer than it does for straight hair.

On wash day:

• Cleanse with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo. Don’t scrub — massage your scalp and let the water carry the suds through your lengths.
• Condition generously. Use more than you think you need. Leave some of it in — don’t rinse until your hair feels squeaky.
• Apply your leave-in or curl cream while your hair is still soaking wet. This locks in moisture before it can evaporate.

Define While Wet

The biggest mistake people make is waiting too long to apply styler. Once your hair starts drying, the curl pattern is already set — and reapplying product won’t redefine it.

Work in sections. Rake your styler through soaking wet hair, then smooth each section from root to end. This helps the curls clump together and form defined spirals. If your hair is thick, work in smaller sections. It takes longer but the results are worth it.

Dry Without Disturbing

Once your product is in, your job is to let your hair dry without touching it. Every time you touch wet curls, you disrupt the curl pattern and create frizz.

You can air-dry or use a diffuser on low heat and low speed. If you diffuse, hover first — don’t move the dryer around. Once your hair is about 80% dry, you can gently scrunch out the cast (the crunchy feeling your styler leaves behind) with dry hands or a small amount of oil.

Protect Your Curls Overnight

Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. Cotton absorbs moisture and creates friction, which causes frizz and flattening. A satin or silk pillowcase lets your curls stay defined and dry overnight — and this is our top recommendation. We prefer it over bonnets, which can cause sweating and reintroduce moisture.

In the morning, don’t reach for the comb. If your curls need a boost, a light refresh takes 10 minutes.

The Day 3-4 Refresh

By Day 3 or 4, your curls may look a little flat or frizzy at the roots. That’s normal — and you don’t need to re-wash. Here’s how to refresh:

• Spray your hair with water until it’s damp, not soaking.
• Add a small amount of leave-in or curl cream only where the curl pattern has loosened.
• Smooth the product in gently — don’t rake or scrunch aggressively.
• Let air-dry or diffuse on low.

This extends your wash and go by 2-3 more days. Done right, you can get a full 7 days out of one wash day.

You did your wash day. Your curls looked amazing on Day 1. By Day 3, they’ve flattened, frizzed, or lost their shape entirely. Sound familiar?

This is one of the most common concerns we hear at Unity Salon & Spa Center. The good news: it’s usually fixable with a few adjustments to your routine. Here’s what’s likely happening and what to do about it.

You’re Not Hydrating Enough

Curly hair is naturally dry because the oils from your scalp have to travel down a spiral path to reach the ends. That journey takes longer than it does for straight hair — which means your curls need more moisture than you might think.

If your curls are dropping by Day 3, your hair may not be hydrated enough from the start. This means:

• Use more conditioner than you think you need during wash day.
• Don’t rinse all of it out — leave some in for slip and ongoing moisture.
• Add a leave-in conditioner or curl cream while your hair is still wet.

You’re Touching Your Hair Too Much

Every time you touch your curls after they’ve set, you disrupt the curl pattern. Running your fingers through, fluffing the roots, or re-scrunching dry hair breaks the definition you created on wash day.

The fix: once your hair is dry, hands off. If you need volume at the roots, use a pick at the scalp only — don’t pull through the lengths.

You’re Sleeping on a Regular Pillowcase

Cotton absorbs moisture and creates friction. That friction is what causes the frizz and flattening you see by Day 3.

Switch to a satin or silk pillowcase. This is our top recommendation — it protects your curls without anything on your head. We prefer this over bonnets because bonnets can cause sweating, which reintroduces moisture and frizz. A satin or silk pillowcase lets your curls stay defined and dry overnight. This one change can extend your wash day results by 1-2 extra days.

You’re Not Refreshing Between Wash Days

You don’t need to re-wash your hair every time it starts to drop. A refresh is lighter than a full wash day and takes 10-15 minutes:

• Spray your hair with water until it’s damp (not soaking).
• Add a small amount of leave-in or curl cream to the areas that have lost definition.
• Scrunch gently and let air-dry or diffuse.

Even with a perfect at-home routine, you’ll need professional maintenance. Here’s the key: we recommend coming back within the first month after your first visit, not waiting 3-4 months.

The “Works” Experience

Your first visit is always one of our Works services. Think of it as a reset for your hair and an education session for you. Here’s what happens:

• Detox and clarify: We remove product buildup so we can see your hair’s true condition.
• Cleanse and hydrate: A deep conditioning treatment tailored to your hair’s needs.
• Curl-by-curl cut: Each curl is shaped individually so your hair falls naturally when you style it at home.
• Styling lesson: Depending on which Works service you choose, you’ll either watch and learn the technique (Look & Learn) or get hands-on practice defining your curls with us (Works for Curls Experience).

How Long Does It Take?

Plan for 2 to 4 hours depending on which Works service you book. The Works for Curls Experience ($540) is our longest (4 hours) because it includes the most hands-on training. Cuts and Curls ($300) is our shortest first-visit service. Works for Curls with Look & Learn ($405) falls in between.

Yes, that’s longer than a typical salon visit. But this is your foundation visit — everything after this is shorter maintenance.
